Biševo

Biševo is a small Adriatic island in Split-Dalmatia County, off the south coast of the island of Vis. The island is best known for a prominent sea cave with a distinctive internal blue light effect.

The principal attraction is the Blue Cave (Modra špilja), where sunlight entering the cave produces an underwater reflection that makes the interior glow blue; visitors approach the cave by small boats and visits are typically brief. The island also has a small harbour at Porat and a handful of coastal paths used for short walks and birdwatching.

Historically Biševo has supported small-scale fishing and farming communities; the Blue Cave became an organised tourist attraction in the 20th century and boat traffic increased with growing visitor demand. The island remains sparsely populated compared with larger Dalmatian islands.

Biševo lies southwest of the island of Vis in the central Adriatic and is reached by passenger boat from the nearby ports of Komiža and Vis. The terrain is low and rocky with a coastline of small coves and caves.

• Best time to visit: The Blue Cave is visited by small tourist boats and the optical effect is strongest on sunny days around midday in the warmer months, so schedules depend on sea and light conditions.
• Access and crowds: Access is only by boat from the nearby islands of Vis and Komiža; trips are short and can be crowded in summer, so book ahead for peak season.
