Bioparco di Roma is Rome’s principal zoological garden, located within the Villa Borghese park. The zoo was established in the early 20th century and occupies a compact urban site dedicated to animal collections and conservation education.
Exhibits are arranged across landscaped enclosures and walkways within the park, with species from mammals, birds, reptiles and other animal groups on display. The layout allows relatively short walking distances between enclosures, making it suitable for family visits and half-day visits from central Rome.
The zoo was created in 1911 as a city zoological garden and has been redeveloped and modernized over time to focus more on species-appropriate enclosures and conservation messaging. Management and exhibit layouts have evolved to meet modern zoo standards while staying inside Villa Borghese.
