Biogradska Gora
Mountains One of Europe's last primeval forests; national park
A national park in Montenegro centered on Biogradsko Lake, with ancient beech forest and alpine meadows; visitors hike marked trails, boat the lake and watch mountain wildlife.
Biogradska Gora is a national park in northern Montenegro protecting an old-growth mountain forest and a central glacial lake; it was established as a protected area in 1952. The park is one of the few remaining areas of largely virgin forest in Europe and is valued for its intact montane ecosystems.
The park’s principal attraction is Biogradsko Lake, the focal point for walking trails and short hikes. Visitors also use a network of waymarked routes through mature beech and fir forest to reach viewpoints and nearby mountain ridges. The park’s terrain is mostly forested slopes rising above the lake, with trails suitable for day hikes.
Protection began in the mid 20th century to conserve the forest and watersheds; the park’s boundaries and visitor infrastructure were developed after its formal designation in 1952. Management has focused on maintaining natural forest structure and providing low-impact visitor access.
The park sits in the Bjelasica mountain area of northern Montenegro, near the town of Kolašin and within driving distance of central Montenegrin population centers. The landscape is forested montane terrain with the lake at mid elevation.
- Access: Often visited as a day trip from nearby mountain towns; trails around the lake are the most accessible and family friendly.
What to See #
- Biogradsko Lake: Glacial lake at the heart of the park set in old-growth forest; sits at roughly 1,094 metres above sea level and is the main trailhead for shorter walks.
- Primeval forest reserve: Contiguous patch of largely unmanaged primeval mixed forest preserved within the park and noted for mature beech and fir stands.
How to Get to Biogradska Gora #
Biogradska Gora National Park is accessed by road from the nearby town of Kolašin. Visitors normally drive or take local buses from Kolašin to the park entrance near Biogradsko Lake; follow the regional roads out of Kolašin that lead into the park (the park has a visitor area/parking by the lake).
Tips for Visiting Biogradska Gora #
- Visit Biogradsko Lake early in the morning for fewer visitors, calmer water for photos and a higher chance of hearing wildlife before day-trippers arrive.
- Buy your park entrance permit at the official park gate/visitor centre on arrival and ask there for marked-trail recommendations-many visitors stick to the lakeside loop, so the staffed centre is the best source for quieter hikes and viewpoint routes.
- If you want views different from the popular lakeside circuit, follow one of the signed uphill trails from the lakehead-these lead to higher vantage points that most casual visitors skip (check trail conditions at the park desk).
Best Time to Visit Biogradska Gora #
Visit in late spring through early autumn for the best hiking and outdoor access; expect snow and limited access in winter.
