Bibracte

Bibracte is the site of a major ancient Gallic oppidum on Mont Beuvray in Burgundy, France, and served as an important urban and political centre for the Aedui during the late Iron Age. The site includes extensive earthwork ramparts and streets and is a major archaeological project in France.

Visible ramparts and settlement traces on the mountain, a structured archaeological park, and an on-site museum that presents finds from excavations and explains Celtic urban organization. The site is an important reference for studies of Gallic society and Roman-era contact.

Bibracte was occupied primarily in the 3rd to 1st centuries BCE and was gradually abandoned after the Roman foundation of provincial centers nearby. Systematic archaeological work has been ongoing since the 19th century and intensified in the 20th century, with conservation and public interpretation developed alongside research.

Mont Beuvray, where Bibracte sits, is in central-eastern France in the Burgundy region, near the modern town of Autun, and forms a wooded highland area distinct from the surrounding agricultural plain.
