Bertrand Lake
Lake Patagonian lake in Aysén, mountain-fringed waters
A remote Patagonian lake in Chile’s Aysén Region, visited for Andean scenery, trout fishing, boat trips and nearby hiking routes that access glacial valleys.
Bertrand Lake (Lago Bertrand) is a glacial lake located in the Aysén Region of southern Chilean Patagonia. It occupies a narrow basin carved by past glacial activity and lies amid steep, mountainous terrain.
The lake is framed by steep Andean slopes and temperate rainforest, offering scenic views of mountains, glaciers and rivers where accessible. Recreational use is limited by remoteness; visits are typically part of wider expeditions into the Patagonian lake and fjord systems.
The lake is of glacial origin, formed and shaped by repeated glaciations during the Quaternary. Human impact in the immediate area has been small compared with more developed lowland regions of Chile.
Situated in the northern Patagonian Andes within Chile’s Aysén Region, the lake lies inland from the southern Pacific coast in a largely mountainous, sparsely populated part of Chilean Patagonia.
How to Get to Bertrand Lake #
Lago Bertrand is in Chile’s Aysén Region and is reached from the Carretera Austral (Route 7) by turning off onto local gravel roads toward lakeside access points. The nearest regional centres (for services and supplies) are in the Coyhaique area; because roads are often remote and unpaved, access is normally by private vehicle or organised tour rather than frequent public transport.
Tips for Visiting Bertrand Lake #
- Plan a visit in the Chilean summer (austral December-February) when mountain roads and services in Aysén are most reliable and weather windows for outings are larger.
- Treat Lago Bertrand as a remote Patagonian destination: arrange transport and any boat trips in advance from towns along the Carretera Austral, and confirm road and weather conditions the day before travel.
- Expect limited on-site services-book a local lodge or guide if you want guided walks, boat excursions or up-to-date information on access and trail conditions.
Best Time to Visit Bertrand Lake #
Best visited in the austral summer (December-February) when temperatures are mildest and access is generally easiest.
