Bernina Range
Mountains High Alpine massif famed for glaciers and passes
High granite peaks like Piz Bernina and expansive glaciers define the Bernina Range; visitors arrive for mountaineering, glacier walks and the scenic Bernina Railway that threads high passes in Graubünden.
The Bernina Range is a high section of the Rhaetian Alps straddling southeastern Switzerland (canton of Grisons) and the adjacent Italian border. Its highest point, Piz Bernina, reaches 4,049 metres and is the highest summit of the Eastern Alps.
The range has been climbed since the mid 19th century as alpine exploration expanded; glaciers have been long-used travel corridors and now serve scientific monitoring. The Bernina railway, built in the early 20th century, opened high alpine valleys to tourism and commerce.
The massif lies within the canton of Grisons (Graubünden) in eastern Switzerland, with slopes descending towards the Engadin and Val Poschiavo and facing the Italian Lombardy region to the south. High passes and rail links connect the range to nearby alpine settlements.
- Highest peak: The range contains the only 4,000-metre peak in the Eastern Alps at 4,049 metres, making it a focal point for high-alpine mountaineering.
- Railway UNESCO status: The Bernina railway line over the pass is part of the Rhaetian Railway network and is included on the UNESCO World Heritage list for its engineering and alpine route.
What to See #
- Piz Bernina: The principal summit, **Piz Bernina**, rises to 4,049 metres and is the highest peak of the Eastern Alps outside the Western and Central Alps groupings.
- Morteratsch Glacier: The Morteratsch Glacier descends from the Bernina massif and provides a classic glacial approach route used by climbers and walkers from the Morteratsch station.
- Bernina Pass and Railway: The Bernina Pass and the adjacent Rhaetian Railway (Bernina line) cross the southern flanks of the range and link Alpine valleys with scenic rail panoramas.
- Diavolezza / Lagalb: Diavolezza and Lagalb are developed mountain areas with cable cars and ski infrastructure on the northern side of the range.
How to Get to Bernina Range #
