Bern Minster

Bern Minster is the main Gothic cathedral in the Swiss capital Bern, notable for its size and architectural detail; construction began in 1421. Its tower, at roughly 100 metres, is the tallest church tower in Switzerland.

The cathedral interior contains a large nave and a choir with Gothic stone vaulting and stained glass, while the west portal features an elaborate carved Last Judgment scene. Visitors commonly climb the tower for panoramic views over Bern, the Aare River and nearby foothills.

Built as the city’s principal parish church from the early 15th century onward, the cathedral became part of the Reformed church following the Reformation. Work on the main fabric continued in stages over several centuries, including the later completion of the tower.

Bern Minster sits in Bern’s medieval Old City, overlooking the Aare River; it occupies a central position within the historic urban fabric and is a short walk from the main market square.
