Berlin Wall
Building Former Cold War barrier dividing Berlin, symbol of reunification
Sections of the Berlin Wall survive as open‑air galleries such as the East Side Gallery; visitors study Cold War history, murals and memorials along former division lines.
The Berlin Wall was a fortified border barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic beginning on 13 August 1961 to separate East and West Berlin. Most of the wall and its associated fortifications were demolished after the border opened on 9 November 1989, but several segments have been preserved as memorials and galleries.
Today notable surviving sections include the East Side Gallery along the Spree river, a 1.3-kilometre open-air gallery covered in murals painted after 1989, and the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Straße with a preserved strip of original wall, watchtower replicas and an exhibition. Scattered fragments and plaques across the city mark former crossing points and sites of escape attempts.
The wall dramatically altered Berlin’s urban landscape during the Cold War and its fall in 1989 became a defining moment in German reunification, after which many parts were removed, recycled or conserved as historic remnants.
Remains and memorials are located across Berlin, with prominent sites in Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg and Mitte easily reached by public transport.
- How it is preserved today: Significant sections remain as outdoor memorials and open-air galleries rather than continuous walls; many sites are accessible on foot or by tram.
- Important dates: Key dates to remember are 13 August 1961 for the wall's construction and 9 November 1989 for the fall of the inner-German border and the opening of the wall.
What to See #
- East Side Gallery: East Side Gallery is a preserved 1.3-kilometre stretch of the former wall along the Spree river covered in murals painted after 1989 by international artists.
- Berlin Wall Memorial (Bernauer Straße): Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Straße includes an outdoor preserved section of wall, a documentation centre and an exhibition that explains the history of the division and its victims.
How to Get to Berlin Wall #
The best-preserved stretches of the Berlin Wall (East Side Gallery) run along Mühlenstraße near Warschauer Straße/Ostbahnhof. Take the U‑Bahn U1 to Warschauer Straße or the S‑Bahn to Ostbahnhof and walk a few minutes (roughly 5-10 minutes) along the riverfront to the gallery. The site is in Friedrichshain, east of central Berlin and reachable by local buses as well.
Tips for Visiting Berlin Wall #
- For the East Side Gallery (the long painted stretch), go early morning on a weekday to avoid the large crowds around Warschauer Straße and to get unobstructed photos of the murals.
- Use the nearby Warschauer Straße or Ostbahnhof stations for the Gallery; if you want historical context and fewer visitors, combine the Gallery with the quieter Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Straße.
- Most people miss walking across the Oberbaumbrücke for framed views of the Gallery and Spree - include that short detour for distinctive photos and a different perspective.
Best Time to Visit Berlin Wall #
Aim for late spring to early autumn (April-September) for comfortable weather and easier exploration of outdoor sections and memorials.
