Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial

The Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial is located at the site of a former Soviet and East German detention complex in the Hohenschönhausen district of Berlin and documents political imprisonment under the German Democratic Republic. The site preserves cells, interrogation rooms and corridors used for remand and secret detention.

Exhibitions and guided tours focus on the methods of secret policing, the experience of detainees and the institutional history of the site; much of the visitor experience takes place inside original prison buildings. The memorial functions as both an educational museum and a preserved historical site rather than a traditional gallery.

The complex was used by Soviet authorities immediately after World War II and subsequently by the GDR Ministry for State Security (Stasi) as a remand and interrogation prison during the Cold War era; it ceased operating as a political prison with the end of the GDR. After reunification the site was converted into a memorial and museum to document repression and remembrance.

Located in northeast Berlin, the memorial lies within the Hohenschönhausen neighborhood and is reachable by local public transport from central Berlin.
