Berchtesgaden National Park is a protected area in southeastern Bavaria that conserves alpine landscapes, mountain ecosystems and glacial lakes; it was established as a national park in 1978.
The park features steep limestone peaks, high-Alpine meadows, forests and clear glacial lakes. Recreational highlights include marked hiking trails, lakeside walks and small-boat excursions on the park’s glacial lakes.
The national park designation in 1978 focused protection on the Watzmann massif and surrounding habitats and has guided visitor management and conservation since then.
The park lies in the Berchtesgaden Alps near the town of Berchtesgaden and the Austrian border in southeastern Bavaria.

Berchtesgaden National Park is in southeastern Bavaria, Germany, near the town of Berchtesgaden. The nearest international gateway is Salzburg, Austria (about 30-45 minutes by car). Regional trains and buses connect Salzburg and Berchtesgaden; once in town the park’s visitor centre, transport links, and trailheads are readily accessible.
