The island has a long-standing reputation for rugged coastal scenery and century-scale maritime history.
Coastal highlights include sheer cliffs at Pointe des Poulains, sandy beaches such as Les Grands Sables, and the sheltered ports of Le Palais and Sauzon; the island is about 17 km long and 9 km wide. Trails around the perimeter and between villages total many tens of kilometres and are the main way visitors explore the island’s coastline and lighthouses.
Settlement dates go back centuries; the island has been fortified at various times, and parts of its coastline were painted and sketched by 19th-century artists. Modern Belle-Île developed as a fishing and maritime community and later as a tourist destination with ferry connections to the mainland.
Belle-Île lies off the southern coast of Brittany opposite the Quiberon peninsula; the main ferry crossing is to Le Palais. The island is part of the Brittany administrative region and is reached by sea from nearby ports on the mainland.
