Bellano is a small town on the eastern shore of Lake Como in Lombardy, northern Italy, known for its lakeside setting and a dramatic river gorge. The town has medieval streets and compact waterfront development concentrated along the lake and river.

A distinctive feature is the Orrido di Bellano, a narrow rocky gorge carved by the River Pioverna with pedestrian walkways and cascades. The town also has a historic centre with small churches, lakeside promenades and ferry connections along the eastern shore of Lake Como.

Bellano grew as a local lakeside settlement serving fishing, trade and later tourism; much of its built fabric dates from medieval and later periods. The gorge and waterfront have been shaped by centuries of river erosion and small-scale development.

Bellano sits on the eastern side of Lake Como, about 60 km north of Milan by road and rail connections, with steep hills rising behind the town and the Pioverna river flowing through the centre into the lake.

How to Get to Bellano #

Bellano on the eastern shore of Lake Como is served by the regional Milano-Lecco-Colico rail line (Trenord); get off at Bellano‑Esino station, then walk roughly 10-15 minutes down to the lakeside town and waterfront.

By car follow the SS36 / local SP roads along the eastern shore from Lecco or Milan and follow signs for Bellano; parking is on the town approaches with a short walk into the centre.

Arrive early in the morning to see the Orrido di Bellano gorge before tour buses; the gorge's walkways open early and are far quieter at first light.
Use the regional train to Bellano-Perledo station-the station sits within easy walking distance of the old town and the lakeside promenade, saving you from cramped roadside parking.
Don't just stay on the lakefront: spend time in the old town's narrow streets and the small harbor area, which most passing visitors miss when they hop straight onto ferries to Varenna or Lecco.
