Markt is the principal market square in Bruges, a large open plaza surrounded by historic guild houses, cafés, and the city’s medieval belfry. It has been the commercial and civic heart of Bruges for centuries and remains a focal point for visitors.
The square hosts markets and events, and its perimeter contains a dense mix of historic facades, restaurants and tourist services. Many of Bruges’ main attractions are within a short walk of the square.
Historically the square served as the site for markets, public ceremonies and executions, reflecting Bruges’ role as a medieval trading centre. Much of the surrounding architecture dates from the medieval and early modern periods and was refurbished over time.

How to Get to Markt #
The Markt in Bruges is the city’s main square (adjacent to the Belfry). From Brugge railway station it’s about a 20-30 minute walk (≈2 km) into the historic centre; De Lijn buses and local taxis also serve the Markt area.
If driving into Bruges, follow the E40 from Brussels and then the signs for the city centre/Markt to reach central parking and walking zones.
Tips for Visiting Markt #
- Go very early in the morning or around sunset to enjoy the Markt with far fewer tour groups and better photographic light on the façades.
- Approach the square via the quieter side streets (for example from Burg Square) to avoid the busiest photo spots directly in front of the Belfry.
- If you want market activity or local events, check local noticeboards or the city calendar for special market days rather than assuming the square will be busiest with vendors on any given day.
