Belfry of Bruges
Museum Medieval bell tower offering city views in Bruges
A medieval bell tower in Bruges’s Markt square with a 47-bell carillon and steep stairs to a viewing platform. Visitors climb for city panoramas, attend carillon recitals and explore the surrounding guild halls.
The Belfry of Bruges is a medieval bell tower in the centre of Bruges’ Market Square that functions as a landmark and viewpoint. The tower was originally built in the 13th century and has been rebuilt and modified following fires.
Rising to approximately 83 metres, the tower houses a carillon and a treasury; visitors can climb the 366 steps to reach the viewing platform for wide views over the city. The carillon still plays regularly and the bells are a prominent feature of the tower’s function.
The belfry was constructed by the city as a civic tower to store municipal archives and to house the market’s treasury; its role grew as Bruges developed into a trading centre. Over the centuries it was repaired after fires and adapted, retaining its medieval character and civic importance.
Located on the Markt in central Bruges, the belfry anchors the city’s main square and sits amid guild houses, cafés, and market stalls. It is a short walk from Bruges railway station and lies within the compact historic centre.
- Tower climb: Climb the 366 steps to the top for panoramic views over Bruges and the surrounding Flanders plain; access is by a narrow spiral stairway and can be busy in summer.
How to Get to Belfry of Bruges #
The Belfry of Bruges (Belfort) sits on the Markt in central Bruges. From Brugge (Bruges) railway station it is an easy 20-30 minute walk (about 2 km) through the historic centre; taxis and local De Lijn buses also run into the city centre if you prefer not to walk.
If driving from Brussels, follow the E40 west toward Bruges - the distance is roughly 100 km (about 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic) and then follow signs for the city centre/Markt.
Tips for Visiting Belfry of Bruges #
- Arrive right when it opens or late in the afternoon to avoid long queues for the climb - groups and day-trippers concentrate at midday.
- Enter from the Markt (Market Square) side where the ticket desk and the stairwell start; the climb is steep and narrow (several hundred steps), so pace yourself and expect one-way traffic on the stairs.
- Don't rush past the upper levels: the carillon room and the small treasury/exhibit spaces near the top are often overlooked but add historical context and great views of Bruges.
