Befreiungshalle

The Befreiungshalle is a 19th-century commemorative monument on the Michelsberg hill near Kelheim in Bavaria, built to honor the German victories over Napoleon in the Wars of Liberation. Construction took place in the mid-19th century and the structure is a prominent hilltop landmark.

Visitors encounter a monumental circular hall clad in marble with sculptural decoration and a formal interior that reflects 19th-century historicist design; the interior is the main interpretive space. An observation terrace at the top overlooks the Danube valley and the limestone cliffs around Kelheim, offering defined views that make the site popular for photography and short walks. The monument is commonly paired with visits to the Danube river gorge and nearby monastic sites.

King Ludwig I of Bavaria commissioned the monument in the 19th century to commemorate the 1813-1815 Wars of Liberation; construction began in 1842 and the building was completed in the 1860s. The design and execution involved prominent Bavarian architects and sculptors of the period and the structure has been maintained as a public monument since its completion.

Perched on the Michelsberg above the town of Kelheim, the Befreiungshalle overlooks the Danube valley in southern Bavaria and is reachable by road and a short uphill walk from Kelheim town.
