Baztan, Navarre

Baztan is a river valley and municipality in northern Navarre, Spain, characterised by rolling green hills, oak and beech woodlands, and a series of small villages. The area is known for its strong Basque cultural identity and traditional rural architecture.

Trail networks and quiet country roads make the valley popular for walking, cycling and exploring village life; typical sights include stone farmhouses known as caseríos, parish churches and small local markets in town centres. The landscape is primarily agricultural with wooded valleys and pasture.

Historically the Baztan valley formed part of the Kingdom of Navarre and has long-standing local traditions and communal land-use practices. Its cultural and linguistic links tie it to the wider Basque-speaking regions across the border into France.

Baztan lies in northern Navarre near the western foothills of the western Pyrenees, close to the border with France; the town of Elizondo is the valley’s main service centre.
