Bazaleti Lake Lake

Bazaleti Lake is a freshwater lake in Georgia’s Mtskheta-Mtianeti region, north of Tbilisi. It is a small, local lake used for recreation and fishing.

The shoreline offers beaches, picnic areas and informal boat rentals; the lake is commonly used for swimming, small craft and angling in warm months. Facilities are modest and visits are often combined with trips to nearby villages and countryside.

The lake is a natural feature of the eastern foothills of the Greater Caucasus and has long been used by local communities for water and recreation. Surrounding land use has included agriculture and small settlement clusters rather than large-scale development.

Bazaleti sits near the town of Dusheti and adjacent villages in eastern Georgia, roughly 38 km north of central Tbilisi. The setting is low hills and cultivated countryside on the southern edge of the Caucasus foothills.

• Best time to visit: Most active as a recreation spot in late spring and summer when swimming, boating and lakeside picnics are possible.

Drive from Tbilisi (roughly 30-50 km depending on route) via the Mtskheta road toward the Aragvi valley; local minibuses (marshrutkas) depart from Tbilisi’s northern terminals toward Dusheti and pass near the lake. From Dusheti, a short taxi ride reaches the shore.

• Combine a lake visit with a stop at nearby Mukhrani or Dusheti for traditional Georgian hospitality and local cheese.
• Rent a boat from the small pier in summer mornings to see the least disturbed water and the best light for photos.
• If planning a swim, check local advice - some parts are shallow and better for wading than full swimming.
