Bavarian Alps
Mountains Alpine mountain range with ski resorts and peaks
The Bavarian Alps are the portion of the Northern Limestone Alps and Alpine foothills located in southern Bavaria, Germany, extending along the border with Austria. The range includes some of Germany’s highest and most visited peaks and contains a mix of rugged limestone massifs, glacial valleys and alpine lakes.
Key attractions and outdoor activities include high-mountain hiking, mountaineering and ski resorts; the region contains peaks exceeding 2,000 metres, including the Zugspitze (2,962 m) and the Watzmann massif (around 2,713 m). Scenic lakes such as the Königssee and protected areas such as Berchtesgaden National Park are important natural highlights.
The Bavarian Alps developed through Alpine orogeny and Pleistocene glaciation, producing sharp ridges, cirques and deep valleys that shape modern tourism and land use. Over the 19th and 20th centuries alpine villages expanded tourism infrastructure including cable cars, mountain huts and ski facilities.
Geographically the range runs along southern Bavaria, forming Germany’s southern border region with Austria; Munich lies to the north and acts as a major gateway for visitors heading into the mountains.
- High peaks: Mountains in the region commonly exceed 2,000 metres and include Germany's highest summit, important for hiking and winter sports.
- Border and protection: The range straddles the international border and contains protected areas such as Berchtesgaden National Park with distinct alpine ecosystems.
