Mountains Limestone massif in French Alps popular for hiking

The Bauges Mountains (Massif des Bauges) are a limestone massif in the French Prealps, located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The range includes peaks and plateaus and reaches its highest point at Arcalod (2,217 metres).
The area is characterised by karst plateaus, steep ridges and alpine meadows used for pastoral farming; it offers extensive hiking and mountain-walking routes and a small number of local winter-sports facilities. Outdoor activities focus on marked trails, ridge walks and valley paths rather than large ski resorts.
A regional natural park covers much of the massif to protect its landscapes and rural traditions. The designation supports conservation of habitats and local agricultural practices.
The Bauges lie between the cities of Annecy and Chambéry in southeastern France, primarily within the departments of Savoie and Haute-Savoie, with a landscape of valleys, limestone cliffs and upland pastures.
- Highest point: The highest summit in the massif is Arcalod, rising to 2,217 metres.
- Protected area: Much of the area is protected as the Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges, a regional natural park created to conserve its landscapes and traditional land use.
How to Get to Bauges Mountains #
The Bauges Mountains (Massif des Bauges) are accessed from regional towns rather than a single transport hub. By car they lie roughly 20-40 km from the nearest larger cities (Chambéry and Annecy), with driving times typically 30-50 minutes depending on your start point and exact destination in the massif. Park in one of the mountain villages (for example Lescheraines or Les Aillons) and start trails from the village centres; seasonal regional buses connect Chambéry and Annecy with some Bauges villages.
Tips for Visiting Bauges Mountains #
- Visit in spring or early autumn for good weather, fewer summer crowds and clearer views across the massif - summer weekends can be noticeably busier at popular trailheads.
- Approach the park from Annecy or Chambéry and favour lesser-known trails and small mountain villages rather than the busiest cols if you want more solitude and quieter parking.
- Start hikes early on weekends and holidays: many trailhead car parks fill by mid-morning, so an early arrival avoids the busiest periods on the most popular routes.
