Baths of Trajan
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman imperial baths complex on Rome's Esquiline
Ruins of Trajan’s large public baths in Rome, constructed in the early second century; visitors examine vaulted substructures and stone fragments as part of Imperial Rome tours.
The Baths of Trajan were a large imperial bathing complex in ancient Rome, constructed in the early 2nd century AD during the reign of Emperor Trajan. The complex occupied part of the Oppian Hill east of the Colosseum.
Today visitors see substantial archaeological remains including foundations, sections of pavement and masonry that indicate the plan and scale of the baths. The site lies within the broader Imperial fora and Colosseum archaeological zone and is visible from adjacent walks around the Oppian Hill.
Built shortly after Trajan’s major building campaigns in Rome, the baths replicated the imperial model of large public thermae used for bathing, exercise and socialising. Like many ancient structures in Rome, the baths fell into disuse in late antiquity and the Middle Ages and were quarried for building materials.
The ruins are in central Rome on the Oppian Hill, east of the Colosseum and within the modern Rione Monti district, accessible from main tourist routes through the historic centre.

Tips for Visiting Baths of Trajan #
- Visit early in the morning or late afternoon and combine the Baths of Trajan with the nearby Domus Aurea and Imperial Fora walks - seeing the ruins together gives much clearer context than visiting the baths alone.
- View the site from the Via dei Fori Imperiali pedestrian route to appreciate how the baths fit into the imperial landscape, then step into the excavated areas to inspect surviving hypocaust and brickwork details.
- Consider a guided walk covering Trajan's Forum, the baths and the Domus Aurea - the short site is easy to miss amid larger nearby monuments unless you know which remnants to look for.
