Baths of Titus
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman baths complex near the Colosseum
Remains of an early Imperial bath complex built by Emperor Titus, located near the Colosseum in Rome. Visitors inspect masonry, arches and Roman engineering as part of wider walks through the city’s ancient monuments.
The Baths of Titus are the remains of a small imperial bathing complex in central Rome, built in the late first century AD during the reign of the Flavian emperor Titus. The complex is smaller and earlier than the later large imperial baths of Rome but is an important surviving example of early Roman bathing architecture.
Remains include brick-faced walls and vaulted spaces that are visible at street level and are frequently viewed alongside nearby monuments. The site is modest in scale compared with later imperial thermae, so visits are typically short and combined with tours of the immediate Forum and Colosseum area.
The baths were constructed during the Flavian period under Emperor Titus and were later altered and partly incorporated into medieval structures. Over time the complex fell into ruin and only fragments remain above ground today.
They sit in central Rome close to the Roman Forum and the Colosseum in the Lazio region, within the dense archaeological landscape of the ancient city.
- Central location: The ruins are fragmentary and sit close to the Colosseum and the Arch of Titus, so they are often visited in combination with other central Roman antiquities.
What to See #
- Main remains: The surviving brick-faced ruins include vaulted halls and wall sections visible at ground level close to other monuments of the Roman Forum area.
How to Get to Baths of Titus #
The Baths sit inside the archaeological area bounded by the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Take Rome Metro Line B to Colosseo station; the main Forum gates are about a 5-10 minute walk east. Multiple buses stop nearby (e.g., lines 75, 85). From Piazza Venezia it is a 10-15 minute walk along Via dei Fori Imperiali.
Tips for Visiting Baths of Titus #
- Enter the archaeological park via the Roman Forum entrance (Piazza del Foro Romano) to walk past the Baths of Titus in the original procession route; it avoids the largest Colosseum queues.
- Buy a combined Colosseum/Forum/Palatine ticket online and book a time slot - the Baths are visible from the Forum and receive no separate access.
- Go at opening to catch the low light on the worn volcanic tufa and the shallow pools; late afternoon is quieter on the Palatine side.
- Notice the grind marks on the surviving pavement slabs and soot stains on walls - evidence of centuries of reuse, earthquakes and medieval scavenging.
Best Time to Visit Baths of Titus #
Best visited outside high summer - mornings and late afternoons give the ruins breathing room.
