Main image

The Bassin de Saint-Ferréol is a purpose-built reservoir in the Montagne Noire, Occitanie, created in the 17th century to supply the Canal du Midi. It was constructed under the direction of engineer Pierre-Paul Riquet and remains part of the canal system.

The site centres on a large reservoir fed by mountain streams and a substantial earth dam; the dam and shoreline are the main points of interest. Paths around sections of the basin provide views of the water and the original hydraulic works that feed the Canal du Midi.

Constructed in the 17th century as an engineered water storage and regulation facility, the basin and its associated channels formed a key component of Pierre-Paul Riquet’s scheme to supply the Canal du Midi. The project combined the reservoir, feeder channels and the dam to secure a reliable water supply for the canal.

Sited in the Montagne Noire near the town of Revel in southern France, the basin lies inland from the city of Toulouse and is set in a wooded, hilly landscape. It is accessed from local roads around Revel and serves as a regional recreational and historic waterworks site.

  • Historic function: Part of the 17th-century water supply system for the Canal du Midi, built under Pierre-Paul Riquet to regulate and store mountain runoff for the canal.
  • Best viewpoints: The dam crest and viewpoints on the reservoir perimeter offer the clearest views of the engineered works and the lake surface; walking paths run around parts of the shore.

What to See #

  • Barrage de Saint-Ferréol: The earth dam built to retain the reservoir and feed the Canal du Midi, constructed under the direction of Pierre-Paul Riquet in the 17th century; it is the principal engineered structure that created the basin.
  • Reservoir / lac: The open water body and surrounding shorelines used for recreation and ecological interest; originally created to collect and store mountain runoff and supply the Canal du Midi via the Rigole de la Montagne.
  • Rigole de la Montagne: The feeder channel carrying water from the Montagne Noire into the reservoir and onward to the Canal du Midi, built as part of the same 17th-century waterworks project.
