The Basilique de l’Immaculée-Conception de Lourdes is the neo-Gothic “Upper Basilica” in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in southwestern France. It is sited above the Grotto of Massabielle, the focal point for pilgrimages to Lourdes.
The basilica’s interior features pointed-arch Gothic forms, stained glass, and a vaulted choir; because of its position above the Grotto it offers elevated views over the sanctuary complex. Pilgrims and visitors also move between this basilica and the lower Rosary Basilica and the underground basilica as part of the larger pilgrimage site.
The Upper Basilica was built in the late 19th century to serve the growing number of pilgrims to Lourdes and to provide a liturgical space above the Grotto. It forms one of the main devotional churches in a complex that expanded after the reported apparitions of 1858.
The basilica stands on the sanctuary hill directly above the Grotto of Massabielle, within the town of Lourdes in the foothills of the Pyrenees in southwestern France.
