Basilica of St. Pius X
Church Massive underground basilica in Lourdes for pilgrimages
Beneath Lourdes, the underground Basilica of St. Pius X accommodates large pilgrim gatherings and Masses; visitors come for Lourdes’ pilgrimage program and the basilica’s vast nave.
The Basilica of St. Pius X in Lourdes is a large underground Roman Catholic basilica in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, constructed in the mid-20th century to handle mass pilgrimage gatherings. It was built in the 1950s and is notable for its very large capacity.
The interior is a single, expansive oval hall in reinforced concrete designed to seat and accommodate up to approximately 25,000 worshippers, making it primarily a space for large services and assemblies rather than a conventional decorative church interior. The low-ceilinged hall is functional in design and is used for major liturgies, international pilgrim gatherings and special ceremonies connected to the Lourdes pilgrimage calendar.
Commissioned in the 1950s to respond to growing numbers of pilgrims, the basilica was designed and constructed in that decade and consecrated soon after completion. It was added to the ensemble of Lourdes sanctuary buildings to provide a single large covered space for services and events associated with Marian devotion.
Situated within the Lourdes sanctuary complex in southwestern France, the basilica lies close to the Grotto of Massabielle and the town centre of Lourdes in the Occitania region.
