Basilica of Saint-Denis

The Basilica of Saint-Denis is a medieval church in the suburb of Saint-Denis north of Paris, celebrated as an early and influential example of Gothic architecture. Its 12th-century reconstruction under Abbot Suger introduced structural and decorative features that became hallmarks of Gothic style.

The interior contains an extensive royal necropolis where French kings, queens and members of the royal family were buried over many centuries; funerary monuments and sculpted effigies are prominent features. Architectural elements such as large stained-glass windows, ribbed vaulting and pointed arches are visible in the choir and nave.

Abbot Suger initiated the major rebuilding of the church in the 12th century, commissioning new architectural solutions for light and space; later additions and restorations extended and modified the complex across subsequent centuries.
