Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, Aquileia

The Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta is the principal church of Aquileia in northeastern Italy, renowned for its extensive early-Christian mosaic pavement. The basilica forms a central element of the archaeological and ecclesiastical complex that documents Aquileia’s importance from the Roman era into the early Middle Ages.

The interior is dominated by the large mosaic floor covering the nave and presbytery, with figurative and geometric panels produced in late antiquity. Visitors also see the raised presbytery and liturgical fittings as well as later medieval additions to the building fabric.

The church traces its origins to the early Christian period and was enlarged and rebuilt over centuries, reflecting Aquileia’s role as an early episcopal seat and a regional religious centre. The site preserves features from late antiquity through the Middle Ages and has been subject to successive conservation efforts.
