Main image

The Basílica de Santa María la Real de Covadonga is a neo-Romanesque basilica in Covadonga, Asturias, in northern Spain and a principal Marian shrine for the region. It was built in the late 19th century and completed around the turn of the 20th century.

The basilica sits directly before the cave sanctuary that contains the statue of the Virgin known as La Santina, and many visits combine the church with the cave chapel. The nearby Lakes of Covadonga, Enol and Ercina, lie within a few kilometres and are common stops on the same day trip.

The church was constructed in the late 19th century in a neo-Romanesque style using local pink limestone and was completed around 1900. It became the focal point for devotional activity associated with the Covadonga site and the surrounding mountain landscape.

The basilica stands in the parish of Covadonga in the municipality of Cangas de Onís, inside the Picos de Europa area of Asturias. The small town of Cangas de Onís is the nearest service centre for visitors to the sanctuary.

  • Santa Cueva statue: The cave chapel directly behind the basilica contains the revered statue of the Virgin of Covadonga, an important focus of regional pilgrimage.
  • Best viewing points: The approach road and viewpoints around the nearby lakes offer clear views of the basilica set against the Picos de Europa ridges, best visited in clear weather for photography.
