Main image

Barron Falls are a major waterfall on the Barron River in Queensland, located on the edge of the Atherton Tablelands near the town of Kuranda. The falls descend in a series of steep steps and drops into the Barron Gorge.

The total vertical fall is approximately 125 metres from the plateau to the gorge floor, with the appearance changing from narrow, powerful jets in dry times to a full, broad cascade in the wet season. The site is a focal point for tourists travelling on the Kuranda Scenic Railway and the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.

The falls lie within Barron Gorge National Park and are approached by short walks and lookout platforms that give panoramic views of the gorge and river below. The surrounding rainforest and geological sculpting of the gorge are prominent features of the visitor experience.

Situated roughly 20-30 kilometres northwest of Cairns, the falls are one of the most accessible and popular natural attractions in Far North Queensland.

  • Seasonal flow: Flow varies dramatically by season; the falls are at their most spectacular during the wet season when the Barron River is high.
  • Viewing points: Accessible viewpoints include lookouts beside the Kennedy Highway, the Kuranda Scenic Railway and the Skyrail cableway, which all offer distinct viewing angles.

How to Get to Barron Falls #

Barron Falls is reached from Kuranda (accessible by car, local bus or the Kuranda Scenic Railway). Kuranda is about a 25-40 minute drive from Cairns; the Skyrail cableway operates between Smithfield (near Caravonica) and Kuranda and provides a direct aerial approach to the Barron Gorge area.

Tips for Visiting Barron Falls #

  • Take the Kuranda Scenic Railway or the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway for one leg of the trip - both offer unique views of the gorge and reduce walking time to viewing platforms.
  • Visit in the wet season (December-May) for the most dramatic, voluminous falls; in the dry season the cascade can shrink but the walkways are easier.
  • For the best photographs, aim for late afternoon when the canyon light deepens and the falls' tiers show texture.
  • Combine a Barron Falls viewing with a visit to the Barron Gorge National Park lookouts and the hydroelectric station for context on the river's importance.

Best Time to Visit Barron Falls #

For dramatic falls see the wet season; for easier access and clearer viewing choose the dry months.

Wet season (peak flow)
December-May · 24-32°C
