Barrington Tops National Park is a protected highland area in New South Wales encompassing a rugged plateau and upland escarpments. The park contains cool temperate rainforest, subalpine communities and extensive wilderness areas.
Trails and fire trails provide access to subalpine meadows, snowgum woodlands and rainforest gullies; the plateau reaches roughly 1,500 metres in places. The park is used for bushwalking, camping, horse riding and 4WD on designated tracks.
The area preserves plant communities that are remnants of ancient Gondwanan forests and supports diverse native fauna. It is managed for conservation and low-impact recreation as part of a larger protected landscape in the Hunter and Mid North Coast region.
Geographically the park lies inland from the New South Wales coast, roughly 200 kilometres north of Sydney, set on the Barrington Tops plateau between regional towns in the Hunter and Mid North Coast areas.

How to Get to Barrington Tops National Park #
Barrington Tops NP is reached by road from the Hunter Valley and the Mid-North Coast. Major access roads include Thunderbolts Way and Barrington Tops Road; the area is approximately a 2-3 hour drive north of Newcastle or 3-4 hours from Sydney. There are marked picnic areas and trailheads along the main roads.
Tips for Visiting Barrington Tops National Park #
- Drive early and climb to the subalpine plateau before midday cloud builds - mornings often give the clearest views.
- Use the Barrington Tops picnic area and start hikes from Thunderbolts Way (the road across the plateau) to reach short walks and lookouts without a long trek.
- If planning remote backcountry hikes, register intentions with the local NSW National Parks office and consider hiring a local guide for alpine sections.
- In spring (October-November) look for wildflowers on the lower slopes; in cooler months, snow can close higher roads so check conditions.
