How to Get to Barreta Island #
Barreta Island (Ilha da Barreta or Ilha Deserta) is a barrier island off Faro in the Algarve. The island is served only by boat: water taxis and seasonal ferry/tour operators run from Faro Marina (and sometimes from Olhão) to the island; the transfer typically takes on the order of 15-30 minutes. Faro Airport is a short drive to Faro Marina (roughly 10-15 minutes by car), and Faro town/rail station is a short walk to the marina where boats depart.
Tips for Visiting Barreta Island #
- Catch the regular ferry/water-taxi from Faro's marina (Cais de Faro) rather than trying to self-navigate - the island (Ilha Deserta/Barreta) is inside Ria Formosa and most visitors arrive from Faro.
- Facilities on Barreta are minimal but there is a seasonal beachfront restaurant; if you plan to eat there make a reservation in high season and check the ferry schedule for return crossings.
- Treat the island as a protected area: stick to marked landing zones, avoid disturbing nesting birds in spring, and use the walkable sandspit and dunes to spot birds and seals rather than wandering through fragile vegetation.
