Barnenez
Archaeological Site Massive Neolithic burial mound in Brittany
On Brittany’s north coast, Barnenez preserves one of Europe’s earliest megalithic cairns; visitors inspect Neolithic passage graves, low stone chambers and coastal walking paths above the Bay of Morlaix.
Barnenez, commonly called the Barnenez cairn, is a monumental Neolithic burial mound on the northern coast of Brittany in northwestern France. It dates to the early Neolithic and is one of the region’s most important megalithic sites.
The site comprises two joined cairns containing multiple passage graves and internal burial chambers constructed of large dressed stones, with a long earthen and stone mound above. Stone facings and internal corbelled chambers are visible in the restored monument.
Archaeological investigation has shown the monument was built in the early Neolithic and used for collective burials; it has been studied and conserved since the 19th and 20th centuries. The cairn has undergone excavation, repair and partial reconstruction to stabilise and present the chambers to visitors.
Barnenez sits on a headland overlooking Morlaix Bay in the Brittany region, close to the village of Plouezoc’h and accessible by local roads from nearby towns.
- Antiquity: Built in the early Neolithic period, it is among the oldest known megalithic burial monuments in Atlantic Europe and predates many other famous European passage tombs.
What to See #
- Dual cairns and passage graves: The monument is composed of two adjoining cairns containing multiple passage graves and burial chambers set into a long earthen mound dating to the Neolithic.
- Masonry and chambers: Carved and dressed stone facings and internal corbelled chambers show early megalithic construction techniques and preservation of Neolithic masonry work.
