Barania Góra is a mountain in the Silesian Beskids of southern Poland with a summit at about 1,220 metres above sea level. It is notable as the location of the headwaters of the Vistula River.
Marked trails from nearby towns such as Ustroń and Wisła lead through mixed mountain forest to the summit; the area is popular for day hikes and seasonal mountain walking. The upper slopes include forest reserves and open ridgelines that offer panoramic views on clear days.
The mountain has long been a destination for local hikers and was mapped and used for watershed protection and forestry management over the 19th and 20th centuries. Paths and markers have been maintained to guide recreational access.
Barania Góra sits in the Silesian Voivodeship, within the Beskid mountain range of southern Poland, accessible from regional towns in the Silesian Beskids.

Most approaches begin from the town of Wisła (about 5-8 km from the slopes) with several marked trails leading to the summit. There are trailheads at Wisła Jawornik and the Kubalonka Pass; both are accessible by local bus or taxi from Wisła or Ustroń. The ascent typically takes 2-4 hours depending on route and fitness.
Tips for Visiting Barania Góra #
- Start early to catch the low clouds rolling off the ridge; mid-morning often brings views and afternoon clouds can close them down.
- Bring insect repellent and waterproof footwear - the mountain has peat bogs and the trail can be very muddy after rain.
- Follow marked trails and the red-and-white poles used on the Beskid routes; signs and trail markers are well maintained but can be sparse in fog.
- Visit the wooden observation pavilion on the ridge for one of the clearest views of the Wisła valley.
