The Banat Mountains are a group of forested ridges and plateaus in southwestern Romania, located in Caraș-Severin County within the historic Banat region. They form part of the Western Romanian Carpathians and are notable for karst terrain and mixed mountain forests.
Hiking and nature observation are primary activities, with trails and forest roads crossing limestone outcrops, sinkholes and caves. The area includes protected zones where visitors can see old-growth stands, alpine meadows and karst features such as caves and gorges.
The ranges were shaped by long-term geological processes associated with the Carpathian orogeny and subsequent erosion, producing the present ridges and karst formations. Human use has included forestry, pastoralism and, in places such as the Anina area, historical mining and small settlements; parts of the range were later set aside for conservation.
