Ballestas Islands
Islands Sea bird and marine wildlife islands off Peru
From Paracas, day boats circle the Ballestas Islands to watch sea lions, Humboldt penguins and guano-streaked cliffs; short cruises also pass the Candelabro geoglyph on the nearby Pisco coast.
The Ballestas Islands are a small archipelago off the Paracas peninsula on Peru’s southern Pacific coast in the Department of Ica, famed for abundant marine life and seabird colonies. They are a popular short boat-trip destination for wildlife watching and coastal scenery.
Boat excursions commonly pass close to rocky islets crowded with sea birds such as cormorants, boobies and pelicans and to haul-out sites for sea lions; tours also provide views of the large geoglyph known as the Candelabro on the nearby shoreline. Trips from Paracas typically take about one to two hours round trip, and access is regulated as the islands form part of the Paracas National Reserve.
The islands sit off the Paracas peninsula, reachable by a short boat journey from the town of Paracas and from Pisco on the Ica coast.
- How to visit: Most boat tours depart from the port at Paracas and last roughly 1 to 2 hours round trip, keeping a respectful distance from wildlife.
- Protected status: The islands lie within the Paracas National Reserve, so wildlife viewing is from boats rather than onshore landings in most areas.
