Ballenberg

Ballenberg (Freilichtmuseum Ballenberg) is Switzerland’s national open-air museum near Brienz in the Canton of Bern, presenting traditional rural architecture and living crafts from across the country. It is an extensive outdoor museum that preserves and demonstrates vernacular buildings, trades and agricultural life.

The site displays more than 100 original buildings gathered from various cantons, set across approximately 66 hectares of parkland and meadows. On-site are working workshops, farmyards with historic livestock breeds and scheduled demonstrations of traditional crafts and seasonal rural activities.

The museum project assembled historic houses and farm buildings that were dismantled at their original locations and reconstructed at Ballenberg to represent regional Swiss building types and rural interiors. Since opening, the site has served as both a conservation project and a live educational resource on Swiss rural history.

Ballenberg sits between the towns of Brienz and the Lake Brienz shoreline in the Canton of Bern, roughly 25 km east of the city of Interlaken by road and a short drive from Brienz village. The landscape is pre-Alpine with views towards nearby lakes and mountains.
