Baldeneysee

Baldeneysee is a reservoir on the River Ruhr within the city of Essen in North Rhine-Westphalia, created in the early 1930s by impounding the river. It is Essen’s largest lake and a focal point for local outdoor recreation.

The lake supports boating, sailing and rowing and is lined by promenades and parkland used for walking, cycling and waterside cafes. Several rowing and yacht clubs operate from the lake and it regularly hosts local regattas and water-sport events.

The shoreline includes the historic Villa Hügel, the Krupp family residence that overlooks the water, and public park areas. The lake was developed as part of river regulation and urban recreation planning and remains integrated with Essen’s suburbs and green spaces.

Baldeneysee sits on the Ruhr within Essen’s southern boroughs and is surrounded by parkland and residential districts; it is easily reached from the city and forms part of local day-trip and leisure routes.
