Bald Rock National Park is a protected area in northern New South Wales centred on a prominent granite outcrop known as Bald Rock. The rock is one of the larger exposed granite formations in Australia and is the park’s dominant feature.

Hikers use the park’s walking tracks to reach the rock and its summit viewpoints; the exposed granite surface provides panoramic views over the surrounding landscape. The park also preserves pockets of native vegetation and wildlife on the cooler, sheltered slopes.

The granite outcrop and surrounding country have long been places of significance to local Aboriginal people; the area later became a national park to protect the rock, vegetation and wildlife. Management focuses on conserving natural values while providing walking access.

The park sits in northern New South Wales close to the Queensland border and is accessed from local roads off the New England region. The nearest service towns are in the broader Tenterfield area and neighbouring shires.

  • Viewing tips: Marked walking routes lead to summit viewpoints; the outcrop is best experienced on clear days when long-distance views are possible.

What to See #

  • Bald Rock (granite outcrop): A large granite dome that forms the park's central attraction, representing one of Australia's substantial exposed granite outcrops and offering broad views from the summit area.

Tips for Visiting Bald Rock National Park #

  • Arrive before 9am to catch the summit in soft light and avoid the midday sun on exposed granite.
  • Use the Bald Rock picnic area/car park on Bald Rock Road; from there the summit track is the shortest route.
  • After heavy rain the granite becomes treacherously slippery-wait for the surface to dry before attempting the exposed scramble.
