Balao is best reached via Guayaquil's José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport (GYE) and then by road. There is no direct passenger train service; buses and taxis from Guayaquil connect Balao to the regional network.

From GYE you can take an interprovincial bus from the Terminal Terrestre de Guayaquil toward Balao/El Oro (about 2-2.5 hours by road) or hire a taxi/transfer (about 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic).
Train: There is no direct passenger rail service to Balao; Ecuador’s remaining passenger rail lines do not serve this town. Bus: Regular interprovincial buses depart Guayaquil’s Terminal Terrestre toward nearby towns; expect a 2-2.5 hour journey by bus to the Balao area (buy tickets at the terminal or via the operator). Local bus or taxi from the nearest bus stop will complete the last few kilometres into town.

Balao is a small, walkable town - you can cover the center on foot in a short time. For trips farther afield there are local taxis and minibuses that connect to nearby towns and to larger transport hubs. Expect very basic, inexpensive local transport; fares are low compared with big cities. If you plan to travel beyond the canton, allow extra time for infrequent services and arrange connections through Milagro or Guayaquil.
