Baelo Claudia
Archaeological Site Well-preserved Roman ruins near Cádiz, ancient port town
Roman ruins by Bolonia, Baelo Claudia offers intact forum remains, a fish-salting factory and a small museum; visitors combine archaeology with beach walks on Cádiz’s Costa de la Luz.
Baelo Claudia is a Roman archaeological site on the Atlantic coast of Andalusia near the village of Bolonia, southwest Spain, notable as a former commercial port and fish-processing town that dates to the Roman imperial period. The settlement acquired municipal status under the Roman Empire and retains extensive structural remains from that era.
Excavated ruins expose a paved public square, administrative buildings, a theatre, baths and extensive fish-salting workshops with rectangular vats used in garum production; much of the visible masonry dates to the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. The compact site is laid out in an orderly grid and is normally explored on foot within an hour or two.
Established on a coastal promontory and developed under Roman administration, the town grew as a hub for fishing, salting and trade. It declined in late antiquity due to natural changes to the coastline and seismic activity and was abandoned in the early medieval period; archaeological investigation began in the 20th century.
The ruins sit at the head of Bolonia bay on the Cadiz coast, roughly 20 km west of Tarifa and accessible by road from the N-340; the site lies immediately inland from the beach and coastal dunes.
- Best viewing times: Best light for photography is in the morning and late afternoon when shadows accentuate the masonry and the adjacent sand dunes of Bolonia provide a dramatic backdrop.
- Combine with Bolonia beach: The site sits within a short walk of a long sandy beach and exposed coastal dunes, so combine a visit with the nearby shoreline for panoramic views.

- Theatre: Stone seating and stage foundations aligned with the town grid, located near the residential quarter and visible from exposed ruins.
- City walls and gates: Sections of defensive walls, gates and towers marking the town perimeter and showing phases of construction and repair.
