Bachkovo Monastery

Bachkovo Monastery is an Eastern Orthodox monastery near Asenovgrad in southern Bulgaria, founded in 1083 by the Georgian lord Gregory Pakourianos. It is one of Bulgaria’s oldest and most important monastic centres.

The complex contains the central Church of the Assumption with extensive medieval frescoes, an array of chapels and monastic buildings, and a treasury of icons and church silver. Pilgrims and visitors come for the art, the iconography and the monastic site rather than for large-scale tourism infrastructure.

Founded in 1083, the monastery developed under Byzantine, Bulgarian and later Ottoman rule and preserved religious activity across centuries. It has seen restorations and additions in the medieval and post-medieval periods while remaining an active monastic community.

The monastery sits on a wooded slope above a river valley in Plovdiv Province, about 10 km south of Asenovgrad and roughly 30 km from the city of Plovdiv.

• Church of the Assumption: The Church of the Assumption is the monastery's central church and contains extensive fresco cycles dating mainly to the 14th and 15th centuries. It remains the focal point for liturgical services and pilgrimage.
• Monastic complex: The monastic complex includes 11th-century cores and later residential and defensive buildings clustered on a wooded slope above the Chepelare River valley. Several chapels and monastic cells are preserved within the enclosure.
