How to Get to Ayolas#
Ayolas is a small Paraguayan town on the Paraná River near the Yacyretá hydroelectric complex; long-distance travel is usually by road. The main international airport serving the region is Asunción (ASU); cross-border airports in Argentina (Posadas, Puerto Iguazú) are alternatives for some itineraries.
Silvio Pettirossi International Airport (ASU): Asunción’s main international airport (ASU) is the principal gateway for long-distance visitors to Paraguay. From ASU to Ayolas you can travel by bus or hire a private car; driving time is long (roughly 4.5-6+ hours) and private transfers vary widely in price (expect several hundred thousand PYG for a private transfer).
Posadas-Iguazú region airports (PSS / IGR): For some cross-border itineraries it can be quicker to fly into Posadas (Argentina, PSS) or Puerto Iguazú (IGR) and cross by road to southern Paraguay; ground transfers from those airports to Ayolas involve border crossings and take several hours.
Bus: Intercity buses are the standard way to reach Ayolas from Asunción or Encarnación. Long-distance coach companies run services on the Asunción-Encarnación corridor; travel time from Asunción is typically 5-7 hours depending on route and stops and fares vary by operator (economy buses are the cheapest option).
