Avon Valley National Park
Park Western Australian park protecting Avon River valley and wildflowers
East of Perth, Avon Valley National Park follows the Avon River with red-gum woodlands, river cliffs and seasonal wildflowers. Visitors hike, birdwatch and paddle sheltered river stretches.
How to Get to Avon Valley National Park #
Avon Valley National Park lies inland in Western Australia and is best reached by car. From Perth the park is roughly an 80-90 km drive east‑northeast (depending on which park entrance you use) via the Great Eastern Highway/Toodyay Road toward the towns of Toodyay and Northam; those towns are the nearest service centres and the park entrances and trails are a short drive from them.
Public transport to the park itself is limited, so a private car or tour from Perth/Toodyay/Northam is the most practical option.
Tips for Visiting Avon Valley National Park #
- Visit during Western Australia's wildflower season (late winter to early spring) when the valley's flora is at its most spectacular and bird activity increases at first light.
- Approach the park from Toodyay or Northam for the main access roads and plan early-morning drives to key riverine areas where birdwatching and wildlife sightings are more reliable.
- Avoid the hottest part of the day by scheduling walks and river-side observation for early morning or late afternoon when animals are most active and the light is best for photography.
