Avaricum
Archaeological Site Ancient Gallic-Roman town ruins near modern Bourges
Known to Romans as Avaricum, the site corresponds to modern Bourges; history‑minded visitors trace Gallic and Roman archaeology and visit Bourges Cathedral and medieval streets nearby.
Avaricum is the classical name for the ancient Gallic and Roman settlement located at the site of modern Bourges in central France, notable as a major urban centre of the Bituriges tribe. It is historically significant for its capture during Julius Caesar’s Gallic campaigns.
Today the location of Avaricum lies under and around the medieval and modern streets of Bourges; surviving traces are mainly archaeological finds displayed in local collections rather than extensive exposed ruins. Interest centres on material recovered from the Roman period and the layout of the town as reconstructed by archaeologists.
The settlement was the principal town of the Bituriges Cubi and was besieged and taken by Julius Caesar in 52 BC during the Gallic Wars. After Roman incorporation it continued as an urban centre through the Roman period and later evolved into the medieval city of Bourges.
Avaricum lies in the heart of the Centre-Val de Loire region, occupying the site of present-day Bourges. The modern city functions as the nearest urban centre and preserves much of the later historical townscape above the ancient remains.
- Visibility of remains: The site corresponds to the core of the Roman-period town within the modern city of Bourges, so archaeological remains are mostly subsumed beneath the later urban fabric.
