Avala Tower is a telecommunications and observation tower on Mount Avala near Belgrade in central Serbia, originally completed in 1965 and rebuilt after wartime destruction. The modern tower reopened in 2010 and serves as both a broadcast mast and a public viewpoint.
The tower offers a public observation level with wide views across the Belgrade region and surrounding low hills; on clear days visibility extends toward the city and surrounding plains. The site includes visitor facilities and is commonly visited as a half-day excursion from Belgrade.
The original tower was designed and completed in the mid-1960s and became a national symbol; it was demolished in 1999 and subsequently reconstructed to modern standards before reopening in 2010. The rebuilt structure retained the tower’s commemorative role while restoring its function for broadcasting.
The tower sits on the slopes of Mount Avala, roughly 16 km southeast of central Belgrade, surrounded by wooded slopes and parkland that are used for recreation and short walks.
