Mountain Low mountain and monument overlooking Belgrade
Near Belgrade, Avala offers short hikes, the Avala Tower viewpoint and wartime monuments; locals and visitors head there for panoramic city views, picnics and informal forest trails.
Avala is a prominent hill and recreational area in Central Serbia, located just southeast of Belgrade. The mountain summit reaches about 511 metres above sea level and has long been used for tourism, monuments, and communications infrastructure.
Key man-made features on Avala include a tall communications and observation tower and a national memorial monument; the tower provides panoramic views while the monument commemorates soldiers from earlier conflicts. Trails, picnic areas, and access roads make the hill a frequent short-trip destination from Belgrade.
The mountain and its facilities have been rebuilt and refurbished at different times during the 20th and 21st centuries, with the tower notably reconstructed after being damaged in conflict and later reopened as an observation and broadcast structure.
Avala sits on the Belgrade uplands about 16 to 20 kilometres southeast of the city center, rising above surrounding lowland plains and making it visually prominent from the metropolis.
