Ningaloo Coast
Nature Reserve Fringing coral reef known for seasonal whale sharks
Shallow reefs along Ningaloo let snorkelers and divers swim with whale sharks, manta rays and turtles directly from shore; Cape Range National Park adds gorges, red limestone and camping options.
The Ningaloo Coast is a World Heritage-listed fringing reef system on the northwestern coast of Western Australia. The reef stretches for roughly 260 km and lies unusually close to shore, creating accessible coral habitats and rich marine life.
Close-to-shore coral gardens, seasonal aggregations of whale sharks, manta rays and humpback whales, and the adjacent Cape Range National Park with limestone gorges and coastlines. Visitors use Exmouth and Coral Bay as launching points for snorkelling, diving and wildlife tours.
The reef supports significant marine biodiversity and is managed through a combination of marine park zoning and national park protections on land. Tourism and research are regulated to limit impacts on the reef’s coral communities and seasonal wildlife aggregations.
The Ningaloo Coast lies on the North West Cape region of Western Australia; Exmouth is the main service town and gateway to the marine park and reef.
- Whale shark season: The whale shark season is typically from March to August and is the principal draw for swim-with-whale-shark tourism.
- Shore access: Much of the reef lies within a marine park and is accessible for shore snorkelling and short boat trips because the reef lies close to the coastline.
What to See #
- Ningaloo Reef: Ningaloo Reef - a fringing coral reef system that extends for about 260 km along the northwest coast of Western Australia.
- Cape Range National Park: Cape Range National Park - a limestone range adjacent to the reef with gorges, beaches and terrestrial biodiversity that complements the marine environment.
- Gateway towns: Coral Bay and Exmouth - coastal service towns that serve as main visitor gateways to the reef and marine park.
How to Get to Ningaloo Coast #
The Ningaloo Coast is most commonly accessed from the town of Exmouth (gateway to the central reef) - Learmonth/Exmouth Airport (LEA) has flights from Perth and the airport is a roughly 30-40 minute drive to Exmouth town. Depending on which part of the Ningaloo Coast you want (Exmouth, Yardie Creek, Turquoise Bay, or further south), travel from Exmouth to beaches and boat launch points is typically a 10-60 minute drive. Overland from Perth is a long drive of about 1,200-1,300 km north along the North West Coastal Highway; many visitors fly to Learmonth/Exmouth and then drive locally.
Tips for Visiting Ningaloo Coast #
- For whale‑shark encounters, book a licensed operator out of Exmouth or Coral Bay for trips during the season (roughly March-July) and reserve well in advance-operators limit numbers to protect animals and sell out quickly.
- To avoid the busiest boats and shore crowds at Turquoise Bay and other prime snorkel sites, plan early‑morning snorkels and ask operators about quieter drop‑off points along the reef; visitors who time the drift snorkel at slack tides get the clearest water.
Best Time to Visit Ningaloo Coast #
The best time to visit Ningaloo Coast is in the austral autumn-winter shoulder months (March-August), which combine good sea conditions and peak marine wildlife encounters.
