Main image

Außenalster is the larger, outer lake section of the Alster lakes in central Hamburg, forming a major recreational water body inside the city.

A continuous promenade encircles the lake for pedestrians and cyclists and is used for jogging, leisure walks and waterfront cafes. The lake is also used for small-boat sailing and rowing, and the shores host parks and terraces that attract locals and visitors.

The Alster lakes were formed historically by damming the Alster River for mill and urban purposes; over time the lakes became integrated into Hamburg’s urban planning and recreational life. The Außenalster area developed into a formal public amenity through 19th and 20th century landscape improvements.

Situated in central Hamburg, the lake lies north of the Binnenalster and is bordered by the districts of Harvestehude, Rotherbaum and Winterhude, placing it within easy reach of the city centre.

  • Perimeter distance: The walking loop around the Außenalster is roughly 7.4 km and is a standard measure for local runners and walkers.
  • Boating season: Sailboats and small yachts are commonly moored on the lake in spring and summer, making late afternoon and weekends lively times to visit.

What to See #

  • Shore promenades and paths: The broad outer Alster lake has a continuous pedestrian path and waterfront promenades used for walking, jogging and cycling around the water.
  • Waterfront parks: Parks and terraces on the water's edge are popular for watching sailing activity and for seasonal events along the lake.

How to Get to Außenalster #

The Außenalster is in central Hamburg around the Alster lake; it’s immediately adjacent to the city centre. The easiest public‑transport access is to Jungfernstieg (central S‑/U‑Bahnhof) and nearby stations on the Alster’s southern shore - from those stations it’s only a few minutes’ walk to the Außenalster promenade. Many local bus routes also run along the Alsterufer and driving from central Hamburg is a short trip.

Tips for Visiting Außenalster #

  • Begin at Jungfernstieg or Binnenalster and walk the lakeshore counterclockwise in the morning on weekdays to enjoy calmer paths and the classic city views without weekend crowds.
  • Use the quieter stretches along Harvestehude and Winterhude to find peaceful benches and good photo angles of the villas and tree-lined promenades that most tourists miss.
  • For a scenic contrast, time your visit for dusk when the waters reflect city lights and local rowers and sailors create lively but compact activity on the lake rather than large tourist crowds.
