Auberge de Castille

Auberge de Castille is a historic Baroque auberge in Valletta, Malta, originally built for the Knights Hospitaller and now serving as the Office of the Prime Minister. It is one of Valletta’s most prominent Baroque buildings and occupies a central position at Castille Place.

The exterior is noted for its grand, sculpted façade and street-level presence on Republic Street and Castille Place; the building is primarily viewed from the square outside. Public access to the interior is limited because it is an active government office, though the façade and plaza provide photographic views.

Originally constructed as the auberge for the Langue of Castile, Leon and Portugal, the building was substantially remodelled in the 18th century into its present Baroque form. Over time it was repurposed to house various government offices and in the 20th and 21st centuries became the official seat of the Maltese prime minister.

The auberge stands in central Valletta adjacent to the City Gate and Triton Fountain, at the high point of the city’s principal ceremonial axis. It is within walking distance of other major Valletta landmarks and is easily seen from Castille Place.

• Current use: The building currently houses the Office of the Prime Minister of Malta and functions as an active government building, so interior access is limited and security is present.
• Best viewing point: The ornate Baroque façade faces Castille Place near Valletta's City Gate, making the exterior the primary viewpoint for most visitors.
