The Athena Promachos was a monumental bronze statue of Athena that once stood on the Acropolis of Athens in the mid-5th century BC, attributed in ancient sources to the sculptor Phidias. It functioned as a towering civic emblem and was described in antiquity as visible to ships at sea.
Accounts place the statue between the Propylaea and the Parthenon on the Acropolis; ancient descriptions and contemporary coin images indicate a colossal bronze figure armed and striding. The original statue does not survive and is known only through literary sources, coins and later artistic reproductions.
The Athena Promachos occupied a prominent position on the Acropolis ridge in central Athens, forming part of the classical ensemble of temples and monumental sculpture on the hill.
