Astypalaia
Island Butterfly-shaped Dodecanese island with white villages
A butterfly-shaped island in the southern Aegean, Astypalaia attracts visitors for its whitewashed Chora and Venetian Kastro, quiet beaches, local seafood tavernas and boat links to neighboring isles.
Astypalaia is a Greek island in the South Aegean region known for its compact hill town, whitewashed Cycladic architecture, and a dominant Venetian castle at the town summit.
The island’s main attractions include the Chora with its medieval Kastro, narrow pedestrian lanes, and several nearby beaches and coves; maritime connections to other Aegean islands and seasonal ferry services make it a regional transport node. The island is popular for seaside visitors seeking quieter, traditional Greek island towns.
Astypalaia has been inhabited since antiquity and shows layers of Greek and Venetian influence; the prominent castle was established and remodelled in the medieval period by Venetian families, giving the town its fortified character.
Geographically the island lies in the southern Aegean Sea as part of the South Aegean administrative region, served by ferry links to Kos, Rhodes, and Piraeus at varying times of year; the principal settlement and port are on the eastern side of the island.
- Getting around: Public transport on the island is limited outside high season, so many visitors use rental cars, scooters, or local buses to move between villages and beaches.
What to See #
- Chora (main town): The island's principal settlement and historic centre is the Chora, a compact whitewashed hill town dominated by a Venetian-era castle and narrow alleys of traditional houses and churches.
- Venetian Castle (Kastro): A Venetian fortress known locally as the Kastro or Querini Castle sits above the Chora; its walls and remnants date to the medieval period and were remodelled under Venetian influence from the 13th century onward.
- Skala (port): Skala is the island's main port and transport hub, where ferries arrive from nearby islands and the mainland and where most visitor services are concentrated.
- Beaches and coastline: The island offers a range of beaches and coves on the surrounding coast-sandy and rocky options are found along both the eastern and western shores and are accessed by local roads or short hikes.
How to Get to Astypalaia #
Astypalaia (South Aegean) has both ferry and air connections. Regular seasonal ferries connect Astypalaia with Piraeus and neighbouring islands; there is also an airport (Astypalaia Public Airport) with scheduled flights from Athens during the tourist season. Ferries and flights arrive at the island’s port or airport, and local buses, taxis or short drives bring you into the Chora.
Tips for Visiting Astypalaia #
- Arrive at the main ferry port early and walk up to Chora (the castle-topped town) for sunset - the Venetian kastro offers the island's signature panoramic views and is far less crowded at dusk.
- Explore quieter eastern beaches and sheltered coves by renting a small car or using the local bus network; most day-trippers stay near the main port and miss the quieter beaches and coastal hiking paths.
